Thaarabi Tharmapathy, candidate for Secretary

The BLSA Board is core to the strategy and operations of the BLSA, and the Secretary is responsible for supporting this core part of the organisation. The Secretary works closely with the President of the BLSA to set dates for the meetings, promote the meetings, take minutes and ensure the meetings are operating smoothly. This is a non-representative position and does not sit on Student Council.

What's your favourite moment from being a student here?

I have had so many wonderful memories from being a student at BL: from exploring London with my friends, to playing hockey with my amazing team mates and volunteering with StreetDoctors: I can't choose!

What's something you've done that you're proud of?

I'm extremely proud of helping to set up the Anti-Racism Steering Committee and for all the incredible work we have done in the wake of George Floyd's murder. We have been able to have incredibly profound conversations with students and staff alike about race to further improve curricula within BL. So many issues of systemic racism have been highlighted, but there is still hope for long-lasting positive change.

What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?

I think the most important issue this year has been the impact of COVID-19 on education and students' wellbeing. I hope my time on the BLSA Board next year will allow me to further support the work that the team will carry out.
