Kelly Armstrong, Candidate for Entertainments (ENTs) Officer
What would student life be without events and activities? The Entertainments Officer works as part of the Operations Team with the VP Barts (Operations) to organise BLSA events. You’ll liaise with other elected officers and staff to coordinate and promote events and activities to students. The Entertainments Officers also convene and coordinate the Barts and The London Entertainments Committee.
What's your favourite moment from being a student here?
My favourite moment from being a student was probably freshers week. It was so exciting to know that everyone was in the same boat as me and there was as little or as much pressure as I wanted to have on me to make friends and attend outings. I loved the various events available to us during that week and the spontaneity and opportunism that we all took with open arms. Also, I guess there wasn’t any academic pressure so that sure helped!
What's something you've done that you're proud of?
Probably my past theatre career! I spent over 10 years training and performing in professional theatre, film, and TV all over the country which was an opportunity of a lifetime. It was something I worked incredibly hard for and was rather successful in. It gave me a wide variety of people skills, as well as confidence and the ability to adapt in uncertain situations. I dealt with a significant amount of rejection, but I was very lucky to have an excellent support system who pushed me to be better. All in all, it was just one of the best times in my life and I feel pretty proud of myself for working so hard to be in such an awesome industry.
What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?
A problem facing students… I guess that’s quite a hard one, especially as university life seems relatively streamlined. Something I hear often is worry and anxiety about the transition into the new Garrod space and using that as our Barts space. People are often worried that the transition won’t be smooth or that events may be called off while we transition. I suppose my aim is to make it feel like there isn’t a transition even happening, and that the move into the Garrod and our new BLSA space will be seamless. It’s also important that students know what’s going on and can voice any concerns or feedback to be met with appropriate responses and reassurance.
