Alexander Yeghiazarian, candidate for Societies Officer
Societies play a huge role in the student experience for many students. Every year, thousands of students join a society, and the Societies Officer is the voice of all these students. The Societies Officer is also responsible for approving new societies, allocating funding and collaborating with the staff team to improve society processes.
What's your favourite moment from being a student here?
Meeting new people and attending the fantastic events organised by our societies, from teaching at Bart’s Academic Research Society Workshops and CLASS Mock OSCEs to watching performances by BL Drama in Laird Hall.
What's something you've done that you're proud of?
The Bart’s Guild “Celebration of Christmas” 2019 – one of the many concerts I organised during my BL Music presidency. The anxiety of Guild committee was eased by my “dedication and brilliant communication”. Furthermore, the friends and members of the Guild absolutely loved the performances by BL Voices, Chorda Equina and our various soloists, exclaiming that it was “the best ever Celebration of Christmas”.
What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?
I think improvements can be made to the External Speakers Procedure. Currently, some societies utilise the same external speaker for multiple events in one year, and so they need to re-complete the request form. Therefore, I will liaise with the University and Societies team to create a spreadsheet of approved speakers as a way of streamlining the event planning process.
