Olivia Dupere, candidate for Sports Officer

For thousands of students, getting involved in Club Sport is a highlight of their university experience, and the Sports Officer works to make their experience even better. The Sports Officers convene the Club Sport Committee, which means they are responsible for approving new clubs, allocating funding and planning campaigns and projects.

What's your favourite moment from being a student here?

When we finally won merger cup in my second year, everyone was gathered around in the Griff (!) shouting and cheering, and it just felt like we all part of this big mad family and I loved it

What's something you've done that you're proud of?

Back in secondary school I tried out for the school’s athletic team. They wouldn’t let me in (I was terrible). Anyway, fast forward a few months, I had practiced a bit, and they were desperate for someone to fill in the 1500m, I said I would and I won :)

What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?

In terms of sports I think that the biggest issue is rebuilding that sense of community post-pandemic. I am a proud member of sports at Barts, and I hope that next year we can go back to doing all the fun things again.
To try and boost engagement in sports, my plan is to run a series of events at the beginning of next year, to encourage participation particularly from younger members of the university.
