Mahnoor Ahsan, candidate for Volunteering Officer
Many students at Barts and The London are active volunteers through student-led volunteering groups, the Students’ Union volunteering service and through other student-led volunteering groups. Student volunteers help to make positive changes on-campus and within our local community through one-off, short-term or ongoing opportunities.
The Volunteering Officer (BL) is responsible for seeking feedback from and representing the interests of students involved in volunteering. They will also coordinate with the Volunteering Officer (Mile End) and, with the help of Students’ Union staff, will support events, training and provide general support.
What's your favourite moment from being a student here?
During my first year I was chosen as Teddy Bear Hospital's Dental Representative. This was a special moment to me as a fresher as it opened the door of opportunities and new friendships.
What's something you've done that you're proud of?
I've taken part in all kinds of volunteering events but the one I'm the most proud of is Whitechapel Street Kitchen (a student-led initiative that hands out food and daily essentials to homeless people and those in need).
What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?
There's a lack of engagement for volunteering events across all courses. I plan on combatting this by having regular socials where students can network, volunteer (online/in-person) and learn about new opportunities. Plus, I want to publicise these events across various platforms to reach all of you. This will also tackle the lack of recognition for the amazing work volunteering groups do at Barts.
