Becky Hoskyns, candidate for Women's Rep
The Women’s Representative (Barts and The London) shall seek feedback and represent the interests of Barts and The London women students and be their voice on issues they face as women students. They are also responsible for supporting the Vice President Communities, coordinating and convening the Students’ Union's Women’s Forum, liaising with members of the relevant clubs, societies and student groups as well as encouraging more women to participate and engage with the Students’ Union.
What's your favourite moment from being a student here?
Being in Chicago in first year! This was my first experience of being in a show at Bart's and I loved it so much. The cast and crew were incredible and I loved the after party so much - it featured many people coming back to my flat in Floyer and dancing around to 'Let it Go' from Frozen.
What's something you've done that you're proud of?
During the coronavirus pandemic I worked as a paediatric carer with a single mother and her infant on palliative care due to severe brain damage. This was my first experience of looking after for an unwell child and it made me realise how intertwined the care for both the baby and the mother should be; the mother was dealing with a lot of emotional trauma needed a great deal of support.
What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?
Medicine, dentistry and the allied courses at Barts are based off this arbitrary male model. Most textbooks use male images and the base reference for all patients is the '70kg male' - how is this representative?! I want to change the language around our courses to explicitly include women - gender neutral isn't always 'gender neutral' as we are conditioned to believe figures of power (such as a doctor) are male.
